The all-new Hyundai Ioniq 5, available at your local Hyundai dealer, earned a place in Ward’s 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems. Ward hands out this annual award to cars that showcase unique advancements or significantly improved powertrains.
Since 1995, Hyundai has earned a spot in this prestigious award 15 times. The Ioniq 5 was recognized for its amazing performance numbers, charging capabilities, electric driving range, and affordable price.
Hyundai America Technical Center Inc.’s director of electrified propulsion development, Byungho Lee, lauds the new E-GMP platform on the Ioniq 5 that allows it to charge faster than other EVs. Others point to how Hyundai utilizes the leftover space from not needing a transmission tunnel or large engine compartment to redefine what a car can be.
About the Hyundai Ioniq 5
It’s no surprise that the Ioniq 5 is earning recognition. It was recently named Car and Driver’s 2022 EV of the Year award. Awards like this have caused a great deal of hubbub at every Hyundai dealer across the country.
The Ioniq 5 has a couple of powertrain options. The standard setup is a single, rear-mounted electric motor that creates 168 horsepower. If you opt for the longer-range battery, this RWD EV generates 225 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. With this configuration, you can blast off from zero to 60 mph in just 7.4 seconds.
The AWD powertrain adds some potency. This setup includes an electric motor on both the front and rear axle. Together, this combination creates 320 hp and 446 lb-ft of torque. It can also jump from zero to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

With the standard battery pack (58.0-kWh), the Ioniq 5 should provide 220 miles of electric driving range. The extended battery (77.4-kWh) should be able to provide 266 miles with two motors and 303 miles with a single motor.
Hyundai boasts that the larger battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes on the DC fast charger. That means it can add about 68 miles in about five minutes.
You can pick up or order a Hyundai Ioniq 5 at your local Hyundai dealer with a starting price of $41,245.
