The Volkswagen brand is on the verge of making their new lineup of EV models a reality for us to have the drive we want for the future.
Recently, the brand filed applications for trademarks for nine names with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. This application will protect the names of I. D. 1 through I. D. 9 and will be used for the EV models offered. The order in which the names will be used and the models that will wear these numbers is certainly a topic of conversation.
What We Already Know from Volkswagen
VW has offered us a selection of concept models already to give us something to admire and allow us to think of what these new models will be when they arrive. The concepts that we’ve seen from the new MEB platform are the I. D. Buzz, I. D. Crozz, and I. D. Vizzion. As you can see, the brand made use of the “z’s” as part of the names could be more attractive to us than another brand going down the numbering scheme, but it seems that VW is ready to number its first nine EV models 1 through 9 to follow some of the conventional naming we see.
An Order Revealed…Maybe
If Volkswagen were to use the numbers to give us the order in which the models will be released, we won’t see any real rhyme or reason to the mix. The first four numbers could be spoken for with the three concepts mentioned and the I. D. R. that was taken to Pikes Peak to show off on this harrowing track. This model was able to show off and pique our imagination but now the numbering and naming of the VW electric models have us stumped.
Should History be Involved?
Should Volkswagen look to the history of the brand and bring the naming scheme to the market in the way some of the models were named in the past? If they do, the I. D. 1 would be a compact car that has some of the same characteristics as the outgoing Beetle, the I. D. 2 would be the microbus which was originally called the Bulli. This is because the first model from Volkswagen was the Type 1 Beetle and the second, Type 2, was the Bulli. This would also give us the I. D. 3 as the Type 3 which is a compact sedan.
A Volkswagen Mystery Remains
The mystery of what the naming will be for the I. D. models is still in place. What we do know is that the next calendar year is looming, which is when the I. D. models are supposed to enter production. This means we should see the new I. D. models on the platform soon. The first model we will have in the US will be the production version of the I. D. Crozz concept, and we will then have a better idea of what the naming and numbering scheme is from this brand.
