The question facing the new onslaught of EV trucks is whether or not these vehicles are capable of pulling a heavy trailer behind them.
This question is being answered pretty well with some of the trucks that are being offered with batteries powering the drive, but if you’re looking for massive, heavy-duty pulling power, you’ll likely want to look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you’re looking for good towing power, similar to what you find in a half-ton truck, you might be pleasantly surprised by the numbers.
Rivian R1T
The Rivian name is one you want to get to know, and it is a brand that is ready to bring us the electric vehicles that we’ve been waiting for. The R1T is the first truck being offered in the US market, and it will launch with a driving range of over 300 miles, with other versions being offered later in the year.
If you’re looking for one of the EV trucks that can give you the drive you want to enjoy and the power to tow a load, the R1T could be the right truck for you. This model brings you 800 horsepower and 829 lb.-ft. of torque for the drive. That power translates to towing power of 11,000 pounds, making this truck one of the most powerful models in the EV market.
GMC Hummer EV
When you’re looking for one of the trucks that has taken the world by storm, the GMC Hummer EV is certainly on the list. This amazing truck brings up to 1,000 horsepower and has torque numbers that are disputed because the number is so big. If you want a truck that’s made to handle off-road fun and take you where you want across the desert or dry river bed, this truck can be the right choice for you.
The quoted towing capability of this GMC is as little as 7,000 pounds for lower trims that have fewer electric motors, but it can reach as high as 11,000 pounds with all of the engines in the top trim. You’ll admire the removable roof, impressive air suspension, Crab Walk feature, and the Watts to Freedom launch control system. It’s not likely that you’re going to drive this truck to pull a load of materials to the job site, but you can bring a trailer filled with gear to your outdoor destination.
Ford F-150 Lightning
If you’re looking for one of the EV trucks that looks like its gasoline counterpart, the Ford F-150 Lightning is the truck you’ll want to drive. This amazing vehicle brings you the benefits of an electric powertrain that can bring you excellent power and amazing storage areas in this truck. You’ll see a front trunk where the engine used to be, giving you extra room for the stuff you’ll want to bring with you.
The Lightning has an electric powertrain that is rated at 426 horsepower and 775 lb.-ft. of torque while using a standard AWD system. This truck will be callable of driving up to 300 miles when you have the extended-range version, which will make 563 horsepower. As for the towing, this Ford can pull up to 10,000 pounds and carry up to 2,000 pounds worth of payload.
Chevrolet Silverado EV
This new Chevy won’t arrive until the 2024 model year. When it arrives as the RST First Edition model, it will be rated to tow up to 10,000 pounds with the either the standard or long-range battery pack. The WT model will arrive next, and it will be rated to tow 8,000 pounds to the job site. Eventually, a specialized towing-optimized version of the Chevrolet Silverado EV will arrive, and it will give you up to 20,000 pounds of towing capacity.
When the Silverado EV arrives, it will give us a build that we’ve seen before. This truck brings the style that we saw gone from the market when the Chevrolet Avalanche disappeared. One of the coolest features from the Avalanche that will also arrive in the Silverado EV is the Midgate which can be lowered to open the cabin for longer cargo items to be carried in this truck.
Tesla Cybertruck
Although we aren’t sure when this truck will finally be offered by Tesla, it is one that has given us a build and looks that is something completely different from what we find in most trucks. This truck will bring three motors to give you enough power to accelerate to sixty mph in only 2.9 seconds, but we’re more interested in the towing capacity, not the acceleration capabilities of this truck.
The expected range of the three-motor Cybertruck will be 500 miles, while another version will be offered that will be an RWD model that has one motor with a 250-mile range. Depending on the configuration, this truck can tow between 7,500 and 14,000 pounds. Unfortunately, we don’t know when this truck will finally arrive in the market, but when it does, you can bet it will be a truck that has a strong following, even if it’s not used for towing.
Bollinger B2
If you’re looking for one of the EV trucks that aren’t as mainstream as some of the other models on this list, the Bollinger B2 is the truck you want to consider. This truck will bring two motors and give you 614 horsepower and 668 lb.-ft. of torque. This model gives you a crew cab configuration with a six-foot bed while also offering 15-inches of ground clearance and an AWD configuration.
As you can see, the B2 is made to handle the drive you want to take out on the trails if you want to take it there. The tow rating for this truck comes in at 7,500 pounds with a maximum payload of 5,000 pounds for you to have the power needed for outdoor adventures. Is the B2 going to be the electric truck you love to drive? It certainly could be, and it brings you the power and capability you’re looking for.
