Ford has some pretty epic nameplates in its history, and they like to reimagine them and bring them back as something. One of these is the Ford Capri, a compact coupe designed to be the European answer to the Mustang. It is coming back as a four-door midsize electric crossover. What? Yes, you will soon see the Capri once again at a Ford car dealer in Europe.
A Coup-ish Styled Crossover SUV
Regardless of what Ford calls the latest addition to its European lineup, the new Capri is a crossover SUV. It’s built on Volkswagen’s MED platform, with specs that almost match the VW ID.5. It will come with 19-inch wheels, but Ford will offer it with larger 20 and 21-inch wheel sets.
How Much Power Does the Ford Capri EV Get?
The base trim will have rear-wheel drive using a single motor that generates 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque. This setup will have enough power to get you from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds.
Take a step up to the dual motor setup, and a front-mounted motor joins the rear-mounted one. This not only gets you all-wheel drive, but it also delivers 335 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque. Thanks to the additional motor, the sprint from zero to 60 drops to 5.3 seconds.
The Ford Capri Offers Impressive Range and Charging Times
The lithium-ion battery is good for about 390 miles with the rear-wheel drive setup. When you run out of juice, it takes about 28 minutes to get back to 80 percent if you use DC fast charging.
The dual motor setup gets a slightly larger battery that reduces charging times. Plug into a DC fast charger, and the 79-kWh battery will zip from 10 to 80 percent in a mere 26 minutes. The second motor may increase power, but it gets slightly less range. You can expect to go up to 368 miles before needing to stop for a charge.
The Cabin Takes its Cue from the Electric Explorer
It’s not surprising that when you sit inside the new Capri, it feels a lot like the electric explorer. A 14.6-inch vertically oriented touchscreen houses the infotainment system and slides to reveal a storage compartment behind it. If you need more storage, the front armrest also hides a large storage compartment that Ford likes to call the “Megaconsole.”
All the Safety Things
The tech for the advanced safety suite is based on Volkswagen’s latest-generation software. You’ll have all the driver aids you need, from forward collision mitigation to automatic braking and lane departure alert.
If all this sounds good, it’s important to mention that the Capri will only be sold in Europe. If you go to a dealer here in Ford car dealer the States, you will not find one. But the original Capri was only a European vehicle, too. We have the Mustang, the Explorer, the PHEV Escape, and a whole lineup of other Fords to choose from.
