The EV market may have lost a little steam last year, but 2024 might be the year that the EV pickup finds its stride. There are several EV pickups on the market, including the long-awaited Tesla Cybertruck. However, for pickup owners who don’t want to stand out quite that much, several models look and feel more normal. Let’s take a look.
Ford F-150 Lightning
It’s no secret that the Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in America, so it’s a big deal that an EV version is available. The Lightning takes its name from previous high-performance versions of the regular F-150, and when it was revealed in 2021, many thousands of prospective buyers quickly reserved one. Performance is definitely a plus on the Lightning with its 572 horsepower output and 775 pound-feet of torque. It also claims 320 miles of range and offers a massive front trunk along with its bed for storage. One of the most impressive features of the Lightning is its bi-directional power capability, which means it can power your tools or even your house for several days.
Chevrolet Silverado EV
When Ford came out with the Lightning pickup, the Chevy version was sure to follow. The Silverado EV is not just an electric version of the regular Silverado, it’s built uniquely for its segment using the Hummer EV platform. A base Work Truck trim is even available on this EV pickup and it will start at a reasonable price below $40,000. The specs for the base trim are competitive with 510 horsepower and 615 pounds of torque. Probably the smartest feature is its versatile bed that can extend to 10 feet and 10 inches with the optional tailgate extension.
Ram 1500 REV
An EV pickup lineup wouldn’t be complete without an entry from each of the Big Three truckmakers. The Ram 1500 Revolution Electric Vehicle was revealed last year as a concept truck before Ram revealed the production version. The Ram 1500 REV is built on the new STLA Frame platform and comes in two versions. The smaller battery pack yields up to 350 miles of range and the larger pack gets up to 500 miles. Like the Lightning, the Ram 1500 REV is capable of bi-directional charging.
Rivian RIT
The name might sound a little foreign, but the Rivian RIT is as American as it comes. Rivian is an American start-up company that put its truck into production much faster than some of its dedicated EV rivals. Currently, there are three versions available, including a base dual motor, a performance dual motor, and a quad motor. Three battery sizes are also available. The dual motor version gets up to 410 miles of range, while the quad motor features the most power and a reasonable 328 miles of range. Like other EV pickups, the Rivian features a ton of space in its bed and front trunk.
GMC Hummer EV
So the GMC Hummer EV isn’t quite the average EV pickup with its 18 feet of length and 6.5-foot height, but it still looks like a pickup. This is just a pickup for those who want something really big. The GMC Hummer EV fits the bill in more ways than one. First Edition models are sold out, but you still have the choice between a two-motor model and a three-motor model. The latter makes an eye-popping 983 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. It even manages 381 miles of range.
While there are plenty of other EV pickups out there to choose from, these five trucks are a great way to get started shopping for an electric truck.
