It wasn’t long ago that we saw the Honda Urban EV offered as a concept model that might be able to make its way to the market at some point.
This car showed up on the auto show circuit as a retro-styled model during 2017 and as a hatchback that would be cool in our imagination. The car has a fairly minimalistic approach to driving and seems to be offered without real-world requirements for safety and driving abilities, but that might be part of the intrigue of taking this car from the concept model to a production car that we can enjoy.
A Test Mule on the Road
Honda has unleashed a testing mule for the Urban EV on the roads in Europe to see if this can be a car that would make a difference in the market for our drive. This new test mule has one significant change to it with a pair of rear doors that have been added. This doesn’t mean we’ll see it as a five-door hatchback when it arrives on the market, but it also gives us the thought that it might be offered with these extra doors.
The doors that open to the front are probably not going to make the cut, but the face and the rear of this EV seem to be able to carry a strong resemblance to the concept model in the testing mule sofar. On both ends of the test car, the Honda Urban EV shows LED-rimmed lights, which was a signature part of the appearance of the concept model. Although this EV showed up at the auto shows with clean lines and very little equipment, there will have to be some added to make this a road-going machine.
Equipment Expected for the Drive in this Honda
The real-world equipment that might make its way to the new Honda Urban EV include rear window washers and wipers, a rearview camera, a clamshell-style hood, the large dashboard screen that showed up in the concept, and the safety equipment that will be needed. As this car performs its testing, we will have a better idea of how this car will look and what it will offer when it arrives on the market in the near future. The added features will hopefully be added without taking anything away from what the concept model showed us.
When will we see the Honda Urban EV?
Right now, this new model is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The production of the car just might commence sometime next year. Unfortunately, this little EV isn’t expected to arrive in North America right now. Even so, this new car will mark a speedy move for Honda to move from a concept model to the production line if it does make its way to the markets it will be sold in for the 2021 model year.
