The BMW name is synonymous with great driving and we’ve admired the M brand for its high-performance models for several years.
The natural next step for the BMW crossovers of the X3 and X4 is to have a higher performance variant for us to have the drive we want in these small and active SUVs. We’re going to see the BMW X3M and X4 M offered in the future. Both of these models are currently under development and will be shown as prototypes for the vehicles soon. Thankfully a pair of these testing models have been spied at the DTM race at Nurburgring recently.
Not Much Information from BMW
As with most automakers, BMW is working to keep as many of the details of these two new crossovers under wraps until they are ready to show us what will be offered in them. Even so, the BMW team was excited to let us know that both models will be offered with a newly developed straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics. We will also see a new M-tuned xDrive AWD system and an M rear axle differential to make sure we can have a full package of what we want for the drive.
A Look at These New Models
The prototypes that were out on the track making their fast laps showed off with a revised front end, larger air intakes, an upgraded rear bumper with integrated exhaust tips, M alloy wheels, and M brakes. The inside details of these two SUVs weren’t shared at all, but you can imagine both models with M sport seats, an M sport steering wheel, M tri-color stitching, and M badges all around the inside for us to see.
Guessing About the Performance of these BMW Models
We can guess about the performance specs that are expected. Because BMW has used a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine in the past, this could easily be the one that’s added the mix for these new models. This engine has been good enough for 420 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft. of torque but this could be tuned up to 444 ponies and 410 lb.-ft. of torque in the M model of the X3 and X4. This is the power level we’ve seen from this engine with the M3 and M4 Competition, giving us lots of power and performance for the drive.
When Will We See These BMW Models?
The ultimate question is always when we’re going to see the new version of the vehicle offered. Right now, we expect these two vehicles to make their debut at the Paris Motor Show next month, but it’s possible they could be held back until a later date. Expect to see the BMW X3 M and X4 M on sale in Europe in the early part of 2019 while the North American version will possibly be offered by the end of 2019 or in the early months of 2020 for us to begin to enjoy the drive.
