When you think of Toyota you don’t often think of a high-priced hypercar but there’s one in the works and this team is testing it already.
In fact, the TRD Racing Development Team is the arm of the brand that offers racing technology, but we often look at this area of the company as a completely different entity from the rest of the brand. Most of what we think of when Toyota comes to mind is a lineup of affordable vehicles that are perfect for the family and for efficiency. Even so, that hasn’t stopped Toyota from developing what could be the next hypercar.
Bringing the Race to You
There is a car that’s in development by Toyota which is called the GR Super Sports Concept. This car, while a concept at the moment, will likely make its way to the market for the future of driving, but it won’t be for everyone to drive. This new car is one that is expected to cost between $700,000 and $1 million and be built in extremely small numbers. Add to this the fact that it might not be legal to drive on the streets in every market, and this car is one that will only be purchased by a handful of people around the world.
Even the Toyota Team Knows Very Little
Recently, the Toyota Australia marking and sales chief, Sean Hanley, spoke about this new car and hinted at the fact that he doesn’t know when the car will be available, where it will be sold, and where it can be driven on the roads. What is known about this new concept is the fact that it shares a carbon-fiber tub with the Le Mans TS050 LMP1 racecar that won this past year. This car will also share a 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with the racecar.
Hardcore Riding from Toyota
The new GR Super Sports Concept will be a car that requires a special driver that has the skills to handle such a car. This is supposed to be a car that represents the Toyota Racing Division has learned while competing in the WEC top class to bring it to the road for a car that can be put next to some of the most lauded names in the market and compete. This means those who look at this ca as one that can seriously be considered for their purchase might have to decide between this car and the Aston Martin Vulcan when they shop for the exclusive hypercar they want to own.
Changes Heading Toward Production
When the GR Super Sport Concept makes its way to production this car will likely take on a different name and it will arrive after the Supra we’ve been anticipating for a long time. This new exclusive and expensive car will likely arrive in the 2021 model year or later and be a car that we admire for the beauty, the performance, the quality, and the name that we trust. We’ll talk many times about a hypercar being offered by a brand known for affordable family vehicles.
