GMC’s popular compact crossover is gearing up for its next model year, and production timing is now on the books. The 2027 GMC Terrain has a scheduled build date, and dealers will soon be placing their first orders. Dealers will begin placing their orders for the new model year well in advance, with the order banks for the 2027 GMC Terrain scheduled to open on Thursday, April 16th, 2026. This gives dealers a roughly six-week lead time before the first 2027 models start moving down the assembly line.
Before that happens, final orders for the 2026 Terrain will be processed during the week of April 9th, 2026. So if you’ve had your eye on the current model, that’s a date to remember.

What’s New for the 2027 Model Year

That 2025 redesign was a big deal, though. Those updates included a bolder, more upright exterior design echoing GMC’s truck lineage and a completely revamped interior dominated by a standard 15-inch vertical touchscreen and an 11-inch digital instrument cluster.
The 2027 model carries all of that forward. The cabin will continue offering seating for five, with rear cargo space measuring 29.8 cubic feet behind the seats and expanding to 63.5 cubic feet when folded. Over fifteen driver-assistance features remain standard, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and intersection assistance.
Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD engine producing 175 horsepower, paired with a CVT for front-wheel-drive models and an 8-speed automatic for all-wheel-drive versions. Three Trims and Where the Terrain Fits in GMC’s Lineup

The 2026 GMC Terrain starts at $31,895 for the base Elevation trim with front-wheel drive. The Terrain AT4 starts at $41,095, and the Terrain Denali begins at $43,595. Pricing for the 2027 hasn’t been announced yet, but small adjustments are common from year to year.
All-wheel drive is a $2,000 option for the Elevation trim, and it comes standard in the AT4 and Denali models. The AT4 adds off-road tuned suspension and all-terrain tires, while the Denali gets perforated leather seats, animated LED lighting, and 19-inch wheels.
The Terrain holds its position as GMC’s entry-level crossover, though it faces some headwinds. The model experienced a 34 percent sales decline in the first half of 2025. That’s a pretty steep drop, especially when you consider that GMC’s full-size trucks and SUVs were setting records during the same period.
The Bigger Picture for GMC
GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed that plug-in hybrid models will join the lineup in 2027. While those electrified powertrains are expected for models like the Sierra pickup and possibly the Yukon SUV, the Terrain’s refresh later this decade will determine its electrification path.
GM is planning on producing the next-generation Chevy Equinox at the GM Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas starting in mid-2027 while also continuing production at the San Luis Potosi plant, which means Terrain production will likely shift, as well. That could reshape where and how the Terrain gets built in the coming years.
Is the 2027 Terrain Worth Waiting For
For buyers who already like what the current Terrain brings to the table, the 2027 will be a familiar and dependable pick. The big redesign happened in 2025, and GMC won’t be shaking things up again until 2028 or 2029 at the earliest. That means the 2027 is a safe bet for anyone who wants the latest model year without worrying about first-year growing pains.
