New Supra Will Be 100% Toyota

Automaker Cuts Ties With BMW and Builds Own Engine

The all-new Supra is expected to be available in 2027, and a Toyota-built powertrain will power it. Drivers are already excited.

For the past several years, Toyota has been working with BMW to build the GR Supra. The automaker launched the last Supra generation in 2019 with a BMW-built turbocharged 3.0L inline engine, but all that will change for the sixth generation.

A Rift With BMW

The Toyota Supra is Toyota’s equivalent of the BMW Z4. Developed by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing production division, the last generation went on sale in the US in 2019 and has since sold over 24,000 models.

It was the Gazoo Racing production division that was responsible for bringing BMW on board to help with the development of a turbocharged powertrain shared by the Supra and Z4; however, the division has since decided to part ways with its German partner.

Because of its popularity in the US, you can find older models of these used cars without too much difficulty. Just be prepared to pay a steep price for the privilege of driving this impressive Toyota sports car.

The Current Supra

The 2026 GR Supra offers raw power and razor-sharp handling. It accelerates from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds and is available with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

With a sleek design and modern interior, the Supra turns heads everywhere it goes. Its Adaptive Variable Suspension and electronically controlled rear differential offer maximum driving precision, and every aspect of its exterior design is optimized for aerodynamics.

In other words, the Toyota Supra is a track-ready sports car not to be missed. With three trim levels to choose from, starting at just $56,900, it’s also a relatively accessible sports car, comparable to the BMW Z4.

The New Supra

The new Toyota Supra will be built entirely in-house. It will feature a turbocharged 2.0L hybrid powertrain that produces the same 400 hp as the previous BMW engine. The all-new sixth-generation Supra will sit on a rear-wheel-drive platform.

According to Best Car, Japan’s leading car magazine, the new Supra can be expected to become available sometime in 2027.

Meet the Supra Final Edition

In March 2025, 300 Supra Final Edition models were launched in Japan. The last A90 Supra was priced at over $100,000 and produced 434 hp. The limited run sold out almost immediately.

In the US, the situation looks a little different. Only around 100 units of the Mk V Final Edition were launched in April 2025. They didn’t perform quite as well as the Japanese models, producing just 382 hp.

According to the manufacturer, the North American Final Edition focused on chassis and aerodynamic enhancements, rather than engine upgrades, as was done in Japan. The Mk V Final Edition is also available with a six-speed manual box, and it sold for a more reasonable $69,085.
