The New Mercedes Benz Plug-in Hybrid is More Powerful Than its V8 Counterpart – and Cheaper, Too

Mercedes Benz just released their new EQS 580 4Matic SUV, and it’s a powerhouse of a vehicle – more so than the vehicles they’re also making this year that have V8 engines. It even costs less!

With more luxury, technology, and power than ever, could this hybrid be the one that proves EVs can go further than gas engines?

The Models That Paved the Way for the 2023 S580e

If we’re talking about how the S580e 4Matic is an improvement compared to older models, it’s important to know what models inspired the new hybrid and got surpassed by it.

The two most important models are the 2023 S580 4Matic Sedan – the gas-powered version of the hybrid – and the S560e – the previous generation of the hybrid, introduced back in late 2018 and produced in 2019.

The S580 4Matic

This sedan has an MSRP starting at $124,000, a 4.0L V8 engine that gets 496 horsepower and lets you go from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds, and the ability to seat 5.

It also has incredible technology and luxury features – from heated 12-way power front seats and a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen central multimedia display to Active Brake and Attention Assist technology designed to study your driving habits and surroundings to enhance brake capability and alert drowsy drivers.

On top of all that, the sedan has a great smooth style and more color options than you can count. So how could it get better?

The 2019 S560e

Enter the hybrid S560e in late 2018 – to be honest, it was nothing to sneeze at, but it wasn’t the best and brightest hybrid around, either.

The 2020 model cost nearly $110,000 and could go from zero to 60 in 4.9 seconds, but it also only had an all-electric range of 18 miles and 469 horsepower. It was a good Mercedes Benz, but a lackluster hybrid vehicle.

EV fans hoped the vehicle would see some major battery improvement to make it a successful hybrid. Instead, we got a whole new model – the S580e.

What Makes the S580e Great – and When and Where Can You Find It?

Compared to the S560e, this new model has a turbocharged gas engine and 148 horsepower electric motor, giving it 510 horsepower overall. Its larger battery pack gives it an all-electric range of over 40 miles – though EPA estimates haven’t confirmed this yet.

It can seat up to 7, go from zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds, and has luxury and tech improvements – like a 17.7-inch OLED touchscreen central multimedia display and Active Steering Assist in addition to the S580 4Matic sedan’s features.

It also starts at $123,000 – a bit less than the original S580 4Matic model the hybrid is based on.

All around, it’s a great improvement in hybrid technology for Mercedes Benz and even a step above their current gas models.

You’ll be able to find it at U.S. dealer locations by mid-year, so keep your ears open for when it arrives to get your own!
