1989 and the Birth of the MX-5 Miata

This sporty little convertible quickly caught the eyes of drivers across the nation when it was unveiled in 1989. In 1990, the original Miata, also known as the NA Generation, included a number of distinct features that closely resembled the Lotus Elan of the 60s. Pop-up headlights and a wide but lower profile were elements that drivers grew to love. A respectable 1.6 L engine that delivered 116 horsepower was repaired with the five-speed manual transmission that made driving the Miata an absolute joy. Early models were only available in blue, red, and white, with the automaker later adding silver as a choice for drivers to enjoy.

The 90s Were the Years of Innovation

While still in its early days, Mazda continued to cater to what drivers wanted. In 1991, the first special edition MX-5 was unveiled and featured a British racing green look. Tan leather seats, a Nardi branded wood shift knob with a wood hand break, and a signature badge identified the 4,000 models made. 1991 was also the year that the Miata was offered in an automatic transmission with antilock.

1992 saw the introduction of the Miata’s striking Sunburst Yellow, while the 1993 Limited Edition featured a blood-red leather interior and black exterior. A slew of other upgrades, including BBS aluminum wheels, a subtle body kit, and a polished aluminum grille, enhanced the Miata’s well-loved sporty vibe.

In 1994, a cross-body brace behind the seats was introduced, and 1994 saw the introduction of its newest M Edition. The M Edition touted a fully loaded cabin and body style, including a comprehensive R package option. From 1995 to 1996, drivers were also introduced to other variations on the Miata that included a bigger engine size, the latest tech, and more thoughtful comfort features.

1999 and the Second Generation Mazda Miata

The second generation of the MX-5 featured a redesign that offered a more modern and sleek look. Gone were the flip-up headlights, and the body style was curvier and sleeker. 1999 was also the year that the Miata turned 10, and with it came the introduction of a more aggressive body style, as seen in the Anniversary Edition MX.

The MX-5 Comes Alive in the Early 2000s

In 2006, the third generation was unveiled via the NC MX-5. While the automaker ditched the term “Miata,” the MX-5 still touted its iconic shape. and bigger engines helping propel the Miata to new heights.

The power retractable hardtop, sporty and aggressive body kits, 17-inch wheels, black headlight trim, and a black roof defined the sportier club model of 2013. Soon after, in 2016, the 4th generation unveiled the most aggressive, sleek, and sporty body style in the vehicle’s history.

Additionally, a slew of safety features and comfort enhancements defined the latest models.
