Genesis, Hyundai’s upscale division, has been quietly stealing customers from European heavyweights while most people weren’t paying attention. With record sales, new performance models, and an ambitious expansion plan, this brand is proving that luxury doesn’t have to come with a German accent or a massive price tag.

Record-Breaking Sales Momentum

The numbers speak for themselves. Hyundai’s luxury brand outsold Nissan’s Infiniti in the U.S. last year, selling over 80,000 vehicles for the first time. That might not sound like a lot compared to BMW or Mercedes-Benz, but the growth trajectory is what matters here.

Genesis posted the highest percentage growth of the three Hyundai Motor Group brands. Last year, Hyundai and Kia posted a 4% and roughly 1.8% increase in sales, respectively. Genesis, on the other hand, saw its sales jump from 69,175 to over 75,000 units in 2024, an 8% increase.

Right now, the luxury brand is on fire. The Korean automaker just posted its best first quarter ever. While some of its closest competitors also posted gains as luxury buyers rushed to get ahead of potential tariffs, none fared as well as Genesis.

According to Hyundai Motor and industry data, Genesis sold 30,538 vehicles in the U.S. from January through May, marking a 16.5% year-over-year increase. The brand’s explosive growth is driven by its luxury SUV lineup.

The GV80 Effect and Why Buyers Are Switching

A big part of Genesis’s success comes down to the GV80 mid-size SUV. This $60K SUV is outpacing the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE in sales.

It hits a sweet spot in pricing: while it’s comfortably a luxury midsize SUV (the average U.S. transaction price as of August 2025 edged up to $64,766), it avoids some of the sticker-shock that comes with German premium SUVs. The deal feels strong: you get premium finishes, tech, driver aids, comfort, and warranty coverage that rival models either charge extra for or don’t offer at all.

Hyundai and Genesis offer the best warranty policy of any automaker, hands down. This long and thorough warranty has become a major reason people keep choosing the Korean brand, and plenty of buyers pick these cars for the warranty alone. They’re essentially guaranteeing that, no matter what happens, the engine and transmission will make it to 100,000 miles, or they’ll take care of it.

Hybrids, Performance Models, and Electric Dreams

Genesis isn’t resting on its SUV success. The brand has major plans for 2026 that span multiple powertrain options.

For the most part, Genesis has focused solely on all-electric or internal combustion engine vehicles, but that will change in 2026. Genesis is launching its first hybrid, the GV80, this year, followed by the GV70 hybrid in early 2027. The luxury brand is expected to introduce its first extended-range electric vehicle later this year, which will also be based on the GV70.

Later this year, Genesis is expected to launch its first performance EV, the GV60 Magma, and its new flagship full-size GV90 electric SUV as it aims for a bigger piece of the U.S. luxury market.

The Magma performance sub-brand is Genesis’s answer to Mercedes-AMG and BMW M. Magma is the upcoming Genesis performance brand, and Genesis representatives confirmed plans to have a Magma performance-tuned model for every model line in the near future.

Racing Ambitions Add Credibility

Genesis is also building motorsports credibility to support its performance push. The brand shared its racing ambitions, revealing the half-scale GMR-001 Hypercar for the first time in Korea. Genesis plans to compete in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship and the 2027 IMSA Sportscar Championship.

Genesis later announced its new brand direction at the Magma World Premiere, shifting from a “young luxury brand” to luxury high performance.

Can Genesis Keep This Pace Going?

The Genesis 2026 new car lineup marks a big turning point for the brand. From the debut of the flagship GV90 to the introduction of hybrid and extended-range electric models, Genesis is steadily growing its portfolio while maintaining its reputation for design and refinement. As these models begin appearing at major auto shows and dealerships, Genesis is setting itself up as one of the most exciting luxury automakers heading into 2026.

With Genesis outpacing luxury rivals in growth rate and continuing to expand its model range, the established players should be paying attention. This Korean brand has gone from unknown to legitimate contender in under a decade, and the 2026 product offensive suggests they’re aiming even higher.
