A New Duramax is Coming

With a new edition of Duramax comes an all-new feel in the world of diesel-powered vehicles. Diesel enthusiasts can look forward to new improvements and better performances in their pick-up trucks and larger diesel using cars.

What Can be Expected in the New Duramax

Those who know about the General Motors Duramax may be wondering what is going to be improved and what new performance modules will be included in the new version of the Duramax.

The LM2

To best understand what is what will be introduced in the new version, let’s take a look at the latest and current version of the Duramax. The LM2, the 3.0-liter Duramax straight-six turbo-diesel that General Motors introduced in light-duty trucks from Chevy and GMC for the model year 2020, is the current and latest version of the Duramax.

The Duramax-equipped Silverado 1500 will be able to tow up to 13,300 pounds (6,033 kilograms), and the max payload is 1,930 pounds (875 kilos). The Duramax turns these already hefty pickups into absolute beasts, able to tow and haul more than its non-Duramax counterpart.

In the same line as the Sierra 1500, this engine boasts 277 horsepower at 3,750 revolutions per minute and 460 pound-feet (624 Nm) from 1,500 through 3,000 revolutions per minute. This is a perfect match for the 6.2-liter small block’s torque The LM2 is exclusively mated to the 10L80 10-speed transmission.

What is the Duramax All About

The LM2, all the way down to its sleek design, it’s lightweight aluminum for the block and cylinder head, the LM2 includes forged steel connecting rods and forged steel for the crankshaft too. With a variable-geometry turbocharger, the 3.0-liter mill features low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation and a selective catalytic reduction on the filter system. All this helps keep refinement in check. Meaning, that the LM2 aims to not just keep the car’s engine clean, but its surroundings clean as well.

Though reliable and well-respected, the LM2 will not hold a candle to its successor, the LZO. GM Authority can not reveal just how the LZO is going to be better than the LM2, but it is expected to do better in a few key areas.

One of the things that the LZO Duramax is expected to do better in is the overall fuel economy, which is huge considering the trends in vehicular efficiency and stigma surrounding diesel cars, that they are worse for the environment and are a dying breed. The LZO aims to change these things, paint a better picture of these kinds of vehicles, and attempt to make changes and surge toward the future, as is the rest of the automotive industry.

Also, the LM2 is available in full-sized utility vehicles as well as mid-sized pickup trucks. The LM2 is said to average 26 miles per gallon (9 liters per 100 kilometers) in the Silverado 1500 and 24 miles per gallon (9.8 liters per 100 kilometers) in the Tahoe.

The new version of the Duramax, the LZO, will be able to do all these things and more. When it comes out in 2023, diesel fans can set their sights on this. To know more about the new LZO Duramax, contact any GMC dealer near you, and they will be able to assist.
