The future of driving is based on the vehicles that will drive on their own with no driver behind the wheel to take over the controls of the vehicle when on the roads. The latest vehicle to be released for the time on the road is a semi-truck that will be offered by Tesla. This big truck is one that can tow and pull a large trailer behind it without the need of a driver in the seat to handle the ride that can make the distance and deliver the products desired.
Why would a company invest time and money into the development of 18-wheel tractor-trailers that can bring the items we purchase to the stores without a driver behind the wheel? The items that we see on the shelves in the stores that we shop in on a daily basis are brought by these trucks. In fact, more than seventy percent of all the domestic freight is moved via tractor-trailers, and these vehicles account for more than a quarter of the greenhouse emissions offered in the US. This has led the team at Tesla to make this a two-pronged approach to the drive.
The Benefits of an Autonomous EV Semi-Truck
What could make the travel of a vehicle that has the range necessary from an EV powertrain without a driver more efficient and effective than the current semi-trucks we have on the road? First of all, the EV powertrain will reduce the number of emissions offered into the atmosphere. The investment that Tesla has made into the use of electric powertrains makes it easier to have the drive necessary and continue to offer the drive we want without expelling any of the emissions that are produced by the current semi-trucks.
While it might not seem quite as easy to understand why an autonomous drive would be important, when you consider the fatigue that a human driver can feel when they’re on the road, you’ll get an idea of what could possibly happen. When the truck can drive itself from the origin to the destination there is no need to stop, no demand for a specific number of miles driven, and certainly no fatigue that can be felt by the machine. The vehicle can drive and make it to the destination without any challenge or troubles and without stopping along the way for a meal or to use the restroom.
The future of delivery of products to the stores that we shop and experience on a daily basis is found in the semi-trucks that will carry an EV powertrain and be driven entirely by computers. Even though these models aren’t ready to make the long hauls of overnight travel, and are currently limited by the range of the EV powertrain that will be found in these trucks. The lack of a driver isn’t something that is ready to be unleashed on the public roads yet, but this will be the future and Tesla is planning to be at the forefront of this development.
